Description:

Christopher A. D. Murphy (Savannah, 1902-1973), Garden Pedestal, Possibly Woodboo near Montgomery Enclave, Oil on Canvas Board, signed on verso, depicting a garden pedestal, possibly Wooboo near Montgomery Enclave, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 16 3/8 in. x 11 7/8 in.

Provenance: Estate of the artist to his son Cole Christopher Murphy to the Iocovozzi Collection.

Murphy, Hattie Saussy, Emma Wilkins, Sidney Beauman, Lila Cabaniss, and many other members of the Savannah Art Club often traveled out to the Gignilliat property near Montgomery to paint plein air. Views of "Woodboo", as it was called, are seen in many Savannah compositions. The eldest of the seven Murphy children, Christopher A. D. Murphy (1902–1973) left Savannah after high school to attend New York City’s Art Students League. Later, he studied privately with such artists as Eliot Candee Clark and William Chadwick. He was a prominent and influential member of the Savannah arts community for forty years.

Measurements: Height: by sight 13 in. x Width: 9 1/2 in.

Condition:

Good condition, canvas slightly liftin from board near lower edge, not viewed out of frame.
