Description:

Charles Gruppe (MA/NY/Netherlands/Canada, 1860-1940), Lute Player, Oil on Canvas, signed lower left and signed and titled on verso, depicting a seated woman playing a lute, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 26 1/4 in. x 22 1/4 in.

Charles C. Gruppe comes from a respected family of East Coast artists. Gruppe studied at Yale University and at Columbia, as well as at the National University of Mexico. He earned a Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University while on a fellowship there. He was also awarded a Fulbright Fellowship Grant and studied in Italy where he received an Italian Government Award. After school he traveled around Europe, where he traveled through France, Germany, and Holland. Gruppe spent over twenty years in Holland, becoming a celebrity artist and ultimately being patronized by the royalty of Europe. Gruppe returned to America, becoming both a painter and dealer/broker in the art of Dutch painters, and popularizing Dutch art among American collectors and art connoisseurs. His work is represented in many museums in America and Europe. (Askart.com)

Good condition, some craquelure, repaired tear in figures left shoulder, some other minor spots of inpainting throughout, wear to frame.
