Property of Kacey Ratterree, Savannah, GA
Description:
Cast Iron Marble Top Center Table with Savannah History, 19th C, the rectangular marble top on a wood support, on a trestle-form cast iron base on casters.
This table is one of several known to have been brought over on the steamship Savannah, a gift to Captain Moses Rogers and the crew of the S.S. Savannah by Czar Alexander while it was docked in Russia in late 1819. The steamship Savannah was financed by William Scarbrough, launched in New York in 1818 with engines installed soon thereafter in New Jersey, Savannah, though only 98 feet long, became one of the most important vessels in maritime history - the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. After being inspected by President James Monroe, who was visiting Georgia, the ship left Savannah in May, 1819, on a 10,000-mile, six-month-long voyage that would take her to Liverpool, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Copenhagen and Arendal in Norway. Savannah sank off Fire Island, New York, in 1823. See an almost identical table with different top now in the collection of the Ships of the Sea Museum, Savannah.
