Description:

Beatien Yazz (AZ, 1928-2012), Two Works, Tempera on Paper, both signed lower right, one depicting a woman in a desert landscape with moon, unframed with label on verso 'The Indian Arts, Authentic Indian Crafts, 85 West Fifth Avenue, Scottsdale, Arizona and Taos, New Mexico, Judy and Brice Sewell' (size overall: 16 in. x 17 1/2 in.)(toning to paper, small holes along right edge, mounted, wear to edges, light mat burn), the other depicting a figure in feathered mask with dog, matted and unframed (Size of mat: 23 in. x 20 in., with toning to paper, some foxing marks, stains and scratches lower left corner, mounted, wear to edges of mat).

Beatien Yazz is a painter from the Navajo Nation. Alongside his classmates at the Santa Fe Indian School, he contributed to the proliferation of a painting style that is highly sought after by collectors. He served in the U.S. Marines in World War II and was a member of the famed Navajo Code Talkers. Following the war, he returned to the reservation and began to paint in earnest. He specialized in subjects familiar to him in his daily life on the reservation. He has been eminently popular with collectors since the 1950s. (Adobegallery.com)
