Description:
Austro-Hungarian Sterling Silver and Gilt Chess Set with Enamel and Jeweled Decoration, c. 1946, comprising 32 sterling silver playing pieces, each cast and sculpted as medieval figures with light blue and dark blue enamel accents. The playing surface of silver and gold vermeil is set on a stained wood box trimmed with gilt silver and jeweled with amethysts and pearls, opening to a red velvet lined compartment to house the playing pieces. The sides set with four enamel porcelain plaques depicting ships (one plaque with loss). Size of King and Queen: 2 1/2 in.Measurements: Height: of box 5 1/4 in. x Width: 12 1/2 in. x Depth: 12 1/4 in.
Condition:
Good condition, very minor wear to gilded surfaces, three playing pieces with small cracks to white shields and one shield with small frit, small area of wear to enamel on one dark blue knight, and small loss to enamel on cape of dark blue queen, heads and capes removable, one enamel plaque on box with loss, wear to wood on one corner of box.
