Description:

Artic Explorer Elisha Kent Kane Grouping: watercolor and 3 books, comprising watercolor of a ship, boat and iceberg, no signature visible but with accompanying paperwork from deceased indicating it was purchased at the Kane Manor Auction on Sept. 27th 2003 in Kane, PA (sight size 7 in. x 10 in.) framed with plaque reading 'watercolor of the Open Polar Sea, By Dr. Elisha Kent Kane, (Ret. USN & USA) arctic expeditions 1850-1854' and map of the North Pole with labels marking various arctic expeditions, all matted and framed together (frame size: 22 in. x 31 in.). Together with three hardbound books including The Life of Dr. Elisha Kent Kane, and of Other Distinguished American Explorers: Containing Narratives of Their Researches and Adventures in Remote and Interesting Portions of the Globe by Samuel M. Smucker, published by King & Baird, 1858, including portrait on frontispiece, Kane's Explorations: Arctic Explorations in the Years 1853, '54, '55, The Second and Last United States Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin by Elisha Kent Kane, published by R.W. Bliss and Company, 1868, with inscription on the flyleaf, 23 steel engravings and more than 250 wood engravings, including portrait on frontispiece, embossed and gilt cover, and Elisha Kent Kane and the Seafaring Frontier by Jeannette Mirsky, published by Little, Brown and Company, First Edition, 1954, still in original, plastic wrapped dustcover ; and

Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857) was a United States military medical officer and famed Arctic Explorer. Kane was on the First Grinnell expedition to the Arctic, on which he was credited with the discovery of the campsite of the lost expedition of Sir John Franklin. He then led the Second Grinnell expedition. His expeditions to the Arctic went further north than any others of his time and he charted the path that would later be used to reach the North Pole. He gave regular lectures about his travels and wrote two books about his expeditions.

Measurements: Height: of Kane's Explorations, 8 7/8 in. x Width: 6 1/2 in. x Depth: 2 1/2 in.

Condition:

Fair used condition, Smucker's book with separating spine and some water stains to pages and foxing, Kane's book with some discoloration to pages and wear to leather.
