Description:

Arthur Diehl (England/MA, 1870-1929), Dunes, Oil on Board, signed lower left, a landscape of a shoreline with sand dunes and gulls, in a wood frame. Frame size: 11 3/4 in. x 13 3/4 in.

Arthur Vidal Diehl was born in England to an artistic family. By age 19 Diehl decided to abandon his education at Oxford University to explore the Continent, and for a period studied painting in Milan, Italy. Eventually, he returned to England, establishing a studio in London and in 1889 Diehl exhibited one of his paintings at the Royal Academy. Throughout his busy life and career Diehl established studios in Englewood cliffs, Lakewood and Asbury Park, New Jersey, Cape Cod, and Provincetown, and Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut. He is best known for his sand dune and harbor scenes of Cape Cod. (askart.com)
