Description:

Arnold Marc Gorter (Netherlands, 1866-1933), Landscape with Cows, Oil on Canvas, signed lower right, depicting a river with cows, with Christie's stickers verso, in a period giltwood frame. Frame size: 35 in. x 41 3/4 in. Provenance: Christie's 19th Century Paintings , Oct 31, 1997, Sale 8045 lot 279, $4830.

An artist of the Dutch School, Gorter became famous for both his oil paintings and drawings of the vast landscapes with which he was so familiar. A student of the National Academy in Amsterdam, he found success not only in the Netherlands but also in Germany and France. He took part in the great annual exhibitions in Munich and especially in Paris, where at the Salon des Artistes Francais he received all the honours an artist could get. In 1904 the French state bought a large canvas for the Musée du Luxembourg and in 1923 Gorter was elected as a member of the Academie Francaise. The first exhibition of his work in America was at the 1904 Universal Exhibition in St Louis. American art-dealers now began to show his work and after his gold medal at the 1915 'Panama-Pacific' world-fair in San Francisco sales in the US and Canada increased to outnumber those in Holland. The Fry Art Museum in Seattle, for instance, still possesses eight of his pictures. (Askart.com)
