Description:

Alfred J. Tulk (NY/CT, 1899-1988), Mandingo Trader in Liberia, 1932, Oil on Board, signed and dated lower right, titled lower left, portrait of a man with blue robe, red hat and a cane, in a wood frame, with Cooos, Hamden, CT label on verso. Frame size: 29 in. x 24 in.

Alfred Tulk was an American painter, muralist and collector. Tulk studied first at Oberlin Art College and then at Yale University. He is best known for his public murals and the decorative work he completed while working at the Rambusch Decorating Company in New York City. He and his wife later spent a year living and working with a medical missionary in Liberia. While abroad, Tulk collected African artifacts and built up his own portfolio of drawings and paintings depicting the region. (Fairfield University Art Museum)

Measurements: Height: by sight, 26 in. x Width: 20 3/4 in.

Condition:

Overall good condition, craquelure, some small areas of loss to paint, particularly in lower right quadrant and middle left side, light wear to frame.
