After John Webber, A Night Dance, Engraving, (British, 1752-1793) A Night Dance by Women in Hapaee (Tonga, Polynesia), etched and engraved by William Sharp after a drawing by John Webber, titled lower center, inscribed 'J.Webber del.' lower right, and ' W. Sharp sculpt.' lower left, depicting a large group of dancing women with palm trees in the background and seated men in the foreground, unframed. Paper size: 16 1/8 in. x 21 3/4 in. John Webber was born in London in 1752. He was the draftsman on Captain Cook's third and final voyage to the South Seas. His drawings were the source for the engravings in Cook's 'A Voyage to the Pacific', published in 1784.MEASURMENTS: Height: of plate 10 5/8 in. x Width: 16 1/8 in.
