Philip Moulthrop (Georgia, b.1947), Hackberry Turned Wood Vessel, inscribed on base "PCM Philip Moulthrop Hackberry Celtis orcidentalis 27-010."
Born in 1947, Philip Moulthrop was initially drawn to photography at a young age and eventually picked up woodturning. After graduating from law school in Georgia, Moulthrop worked as an attorney by day and in the wood studio at night. In 1997, he finallly gave up law to follow his heart and become a full-time wood turner. Moulthrop is known for his classic wooden vessels which have simple, elegant forms that highlight the subtle grain patterns and colors in the wood. He only uses woods that are native to the Southeastern United States. All of his woods are purchased from tree cutters who have had to cut the tree down due to storm damage or disease.
