Property from the Estates of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, GA Carved Oak Dormition of the Virgin, English or Flemish, Late 15th/Early 16th Century, depicting the deceased Virgin Mary at center being carried by St. Peter and St. Paul to her tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane, floating disembodied hands touch the cloth on Mary's robes symbolizing the story of the high priest, Athonios, who out of spite wanted to disrupt the procession and topple the funeral bier on which the Virgin's body laid, but as he approached an angel invisibly cut off his hands. Height on base 15 1/4 in. x 12 1/4 in.
